Carey-Flintoff Cup re-boot a huge success
The 2021/22 Round 13 Wright Shield match between Mulgrave CC and Ashburton Willows CC was chosen as an opportunity to re-boot a great tradition.
In celebration of two of the clubs greatest ever players - Cam Carey (Ashburton) and David Flintoff (Mulgrave) - the two long-time rival clubs have been contesting an annual match for a piece of silverware named in their honor since 2013/14.
Mulgrave vice president Richard Dwelly said Ashburton Willows was a perfect partner for the annual fixture that not only revives memories of great tussles of the past but allows both clubs to raise much needed funds.
“We have a good rivalry with them that goes back 20-25 years,” Richard said.
“We played in three grand finals against them in a row from 2003 to 2006 and then the semi-final the next season.”
"With Mulgrave CC being promoted back into Wright Shield for the 2021/22 season, the opportunity to re-boot this initiative was just too good an opportunity not to pursue. We thank Ashburton CC for hosting the game given the Mulgrave pavilion is under redevelopment this season, and thank all the supporters from both clubs that attended on the day to make it another memorable event".
